Anchorage’s Year-round Outdoor Playgroup
Skedaddle is a playgroup that meets outdoors year round. At Skedaddle, kids splash in the pouring rain, go sledding when it is -20 and run wild at playgrounds during the summer.
Initially, I didn’t think an outdoor playgroup would actually work in Alaska.

MEA Rate Hike Linked to Chugach Electric Rate Increase
Matanuska Electric Association is to pay more for power, while the Regulatory Commission of Alaska investigates Chugach Electric request for rate increase. MEA customers will see higher bills in the mail next month. The hike is linked to a rate increase granted to Chugach Electric Association for thepower it sells to MEA. The rate increase began on Monday, April 8.
Running with the Big Dogs
Thirty-some years ago my friend Ramona had the use of her friend’s team of Malemute-McKenzie River huskies. These were working dogs, used by her friend Steve to haul freight and gear on Mt. McKinley for mountain climbing teams. During his off-season, Ramona ran them to keep them in shape.
Ramona and I decided to take on challenge one winter—we wanted to mush to the old copper mining town of McCarthy, deep in the Wrangell-St. Elias.

AK Moose Federation Breaks New Ground
The Alaska Moose Federation is working with an Alaska Native entity on a moose diversion project near Big Lake. The Federation has announced a partnership with the Alaska Operating Engineers and Employers Training to use heavy equipment to spur willow growth on up to 200 acres of land owned by the Knikatnu [ Knik AT noo ] Native Corporation.

Nordic Combined: A Developing Alaskan Sport
At the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, the U.S. went from no medals ever in the sport of nordic combined to a gold and three silvers, more than any other country. Now there’s a push on to keep performing in this combination of jumping and distance skiing, and Anchorage is a key to the effort. On the next Outdoor Explorer, host Charles Wohlforth will be joined by a national team skier and coach, in town to build the athlete pipeline.

Four Arrested in Sexual Assault of Minor
Anchorage Police says four men, ages 19 - 21, have been arrested in the alleged assault of a seventeen year old homeless girl.
