Anthony "Tony" Knowles enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1962 and served in the 82nd Airborne Division. He volunteered to serve in Vietnam from 1964 to 1965 where he worked as an Intelligence Advisor. Knowles later was elected mayor of Anchorage from 1981 to 1987. He then went on to become the seventh Governor of Alaska from December 1994 to to December 2002.
