Ballot Measure 1 - Oil Tax Referendum
Last year the Legislature narrowly passed Senate Bill 21, which offers tax cuts to encourage more drilling in the wake of declining oil production statewide. Today, Alaska voters have the opportunity to repeal the cuts laid out under SB 21. Those voting "yes" on Ballot Measure 1 are voting to repeal the cuts. Those voting "no" are electing to leave the tax reform as it stands under Senate Bill 21.Current poll numbers are being pulled from the Alaska Division of Elections webpage.YES: 47.78%NO: 52.22%98.6% of precincts reporting.
2014 Candidates for Alaska Legislature - Primaries
Two-term incumbent Eric Feige lost his race for House District 9 to challenger Bill Colver. Benny Nageak narrowly keeps his seat in House District 40 (Barrow/Kotzebue) after a tight race against Dean Westlake. Over in Fairbanks' House District 3, incumbent Tammie Wilson won over incumbent Doug Isaacson; the two were pitted against each other due to redistricting.
In Wake Of "Education Session," Democrats Run Teacher Candidates
In the aftermath of what Gov. Sean Parnell dubbed the "education session," half a dozen of the new candidates being fielded by the Democratic Party are educators. The most high profile of these is Bob Williams, who was once named the Alaska Teacher of the Year and is now a candidate for lieutenant governor.

With Senate Career Behind Him, French Not Looking Back
On Tuesday, voters will decide which Republican candidate will face off against Mark Begich in a closely watched Senate primary. But while it's gotten less attention, there's also a contested statewide race on the Democratic ballot for the office of lieutenant governor. One of the two candidates is Hollis French, a state senator who is giving up his seat in the Legislature to run for the job.
Sullivan Continues to Lead Fundraising Battle
In the U.S. Senate race, Dan Sullivan’s financial advantage over otherRepublican contenders continues to grow. Sullivan has raised more than $4 million, most of it from Outside Alaska. He’s done well in Ohio, the headquarters of the paint company his family runs. Money has also poured into the Sullivan campaign from national fundraising groups working to win Republican control of the Senate.

Alaska Kayaker Still Missing in Costa Rica
Almost two weeks ago, 27-year-old Alaskan Cody Dial was reported missing on a kayak trip in Costa Rica. Dial is the son of Roman Dial, a well-known outdoorsman and Alaska Pacific University professor.

New Student Fee to Help Cover UAF Budget Shortfall for Facility Upgrade
In June, Governor Sean Parnell signed Senate Bill 218 into law, paving the way for a $245 million dollar renovation and upgrade to the power plant at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. But the project is funded in part by revenue bonds that have to be paid back to the state. According to a memorandum sent last week by University of Alaska System President Pat Gamble, the Board of Regents plans to implement a student fee to cover costs associated with the project.Download Audio:
