Sunny skies, stiff winds greet bike relay racers in Haines
It was the Year of the Headwind on this year’s Kluane-Chilkat International Bike Relay. But more than 1,100 riders managed to complete the 150-mile event from Haines Junction, Yukon, to Haines. As it does every year, the 24th annual race featured teams of eight, four, two, and solo riders – some out for the glory and some in it just for fun.

Northwest Passage cruise marks turning point in Arctic tourism
On August 16, the Crystal Serenity will steam out of Seward on a historic trip. The vessel will be the first big luxury liner to chart a course through the Northwest Passage, stopping in Kodiak, Unalaska and Nome before cruising through Canada's far north to Greenland and then south to New York. If you want to get something done, ask the Girl Scouts. After years of government inertia, the Girls Scouts of Troop 4140 in Sitka have spearheaded the installation of flashing crosswalk signs along some of the busiest state road in town.
