Kristin Bacon of Big Lake is this year’s Kuskokwim 300 Red Lantern winner. The last finisher in this year’s icy sled dog race, Bacon Crossed the finish line Monday at 8:40 AM with an elapsed time of 62 hours and 10 minutes.

The Lower Kuskokwim School District has found temporary spaces to hold classes for both Ayaprun Elitnaurvik and the Kuskokwim Learning Academy students, the two schools housed in the Kilbuck building that was largely destroyed by Tuesday’s fire. The move will split both schools into different sites.

Bethel Regional High School graduate, Natalie Hanson, is now the American powerlifting record holder in three of the sport’s biggest events. At 23-years old, Hanson set the official record for bench press, squat and total weight lifted for her age group and size. As of now, no one in the USA under 23-years old weighing under 75 kilos has ever officially lifted as much weight as she has.

Charles Herron of Bethel, son of State Representative Bob Herron, was found Wednesday after a search in sub-zero weather. Charles wandered into -35 degree wind chills sometime around 4:00 Wednesday morning.

Alaska’s “Dance Diva” Maryann Sundown was laid to rest this Saturday in her home village of Scammon Bay. The 93-year-old inspired countless Yup’ik dancers before she died in her house last week from pneumonia.

Renowned elder and Yup’ik culture bearer Maryann Sundown has passed away. The Scammon Bay elder died Wednesday night, surrounded by her family.

Last week police in Bethel received several calls that a bear, a big bear, was spotted walking through parts of the city. While that may not be a big deal in parts of Alaska, residents in the tundra city say it’s never happened before.
