If you don’t know where you are going it is hard to get there. If population health is your goal then it helps to know that the health of a population is dependent on a number of factors: genetics, socioeconomic class, health care, environment and behavior. Surprisingly health care is a minor contribution to overall health of a population. Behaviors associated with poor health can be assessed and this leads to understanding of how to best use limited resources to improve overall population health. The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey (YRBSS) is one instrument used to understand such behaviors in teens. Today’s program reviews the most recent YRBSS, its results, and efforts to address areas of concern.
