Smokejumpers Race to Divert Seventy Mile Fire From Community of Eagle
Warm, mostly dry weather continues across much of the eastern interior, and that has fire managers concerned about future growth of the Seventy Mile fire in the eastern interior. It’s so far burning in remote country, north of the Seventy Mile River and away from the community of Eagle. Alaska Fire Service spokesman Sam Harrel says a planned burn out operation would blacken an area of heavy timber along the river to protect values on the other side.Listen now:

Anchorage man critically injured in motorcycle crash
A 67-year-old motorcycle driver was critically injured and flown to an Anchorage hospital after crashing Saturday morning near Talkeetna.
Teenage girl falls 70 feet off cliff into Port Valdez
Valdez police are reporting that a 17-year old girl has fallen 70 feet off a cliff into Port Valdez. Police were called to the scene just after 6:30 on Friday night. The teenager had fallen off a cliff near Dock Point Trail and suffered life threatening injuries.
For $1B Radar, It's Clear
The Missile Defense Agency today confirmed Clear Air Station as its preferred location for a new type of radar system, called Long Range Discrimination Radar. The selection of Clear helps solidify Alaska’s role as host to the ground-based mid-course missile defense system, designed primarily to shoot down warheads from North Korea.Download Audio:

Imagine you arrive in a world where it rains all year round, and daylight swings from 17 hours in summertime to a paltry six in winter. And you’re only seven years old. That’s the situation Jasmine Molina found herself when she first got to Sitka, over 5,000 miles from her native city of Manila in the Philippines.
