Up for consideration are two superintendents from rural districts: Michael Johnson of the Copper River School District and Stewart McDonald of the Kodiak Island Borough School District.

The board will take public comment on the candidates, along with other issues,on Thursday at 1:15. According to a department spokesperson, the board will run its tentative selection past Governor Walker to get his approval before it announces an official appointment Friday afternoon.

Two other candidates had been named as finalists, but interim education commissioner Susan McCauley and Robert Boyle of Ketchikan both withdrew their applications in recent weeks.

The commissioner job came open when former Commissioner Mike Hanley was asked to resign in February.
