A Fairbanks-based infantryman has been killed in an insurgent attack in Kandahar Province in Afghanistan. The soldier has been identified as 23-year-old Spc. Douglas Jay Green of Sterling, Virginia. Green was on foot patrol Sunday when a roadside bomb was triggered and he came under attack by small arms fire. Green was assigned to a unit that has lost two soldiers in the last week.
This month, 66 U.S. service members were killed in Afghanistan. According to The Associated Press that makes August the deadliest month in the nearly 10-year-old war. The number includes the 30 American troops killed on August 6th, when insurgents shot down a Chinook helicopter.
