What is Passport?

PBS Passport is an Alaska Public Media member benefit that gives eligible supporters extended access to an on-demand library of quality public television programming online. The PBS Passport library currently offers more than 1,000 episodes to watch, with new PBS programs being added weekly.

How can I sigh up for Passport?

Passport is a benefit for members who contribute a minimum of $5 a month as a sustaining donor or who make a one-time gift of at $60 per year or more. To become a member, make your donation here. Once your gift is processed, you’ll receive an activation key and instructions on setting up your Passport account. (Note: If you are already an existing member and need help activating your account please read below or contact our Member Services by email at membership@alaskapublic.org or call 907-550-8400 (9am–5pm) and we are more than happy to help you.

Passport Programs

What kinds of programs can I see with Passport?

The library features episodes from popular programs like American Experience, American Masters, Antiques Roadshow, Nature, NOVA, and Masterpiece. In addition to these signature series, the library is full of public television’s acclaimed arts, science, history, and lifestyle programs.

How can I view Passport programs?

Passport programs can be viewed on your computer or devices by visiting https://www.pbs.org/video. If you have a smartphone or tablet, download the PBS app for an even better viewing experience. You can access PBS Passport programs through Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV or Amazon Fire Stick. Passport is even compatible with Chromecast!

How can I search for Passport programs only?

Visit https://www.pbs.org/video and enter a search term, such as “masterpiece” or “nova”. Click on “Show Filters” and then click on the UNC Center for Public Television Passport Videos link under “Filter by Access.” In addition to Passport videos, you can filter by shows, types or video link.

Activation

I just made my donation but haven’t received my activation key. What should I do?

Please note you will be emailed your activation code within 24-48 hours.

I’m already a donor at levels required for Passport. How do I find out if I have the benefit?

If you are an existing sustaining donor at $5/month or more or have made a one-time gift of $60 or more this year, it’s possible that our system generated a Passport activation key for you! To check, please visit https://www.pbs.org/passport/lookup/ and enter your email address that you provided to Alaska Public Media. It will then email you an activation code. If it can’t find your activation code please contact our Member Services by email at membership@alaskapublic.org or call 907-550-8400 (9am–5pm) and we are happy to help.

How do I find my activation key?

Please visit https://www.pbs.org/passport/lookup/ and enter your email address you provided to Alaska Public Media. If your email address is registered already, It will then email you an activation code. To activate your account visit https://www.pbs.org/passport/ and enter the four word activation code with the dashes between the words and no spaces. When the code is accepted, you will be asked to create your PBS account with the email address and a password. At this point you are set up and you may begin streaming programming. If the look-up page does not recognize your email address in its database please contact our Member Services by email at membership@alaskapublic.org or call 907-550-8400 (9am–5pm) and we are happy to help.

I know that I am a Passport member but my account cannot be found in the system. What should I do?

Please make sure that the email address that you used to activate your account is the same. If you’re still having trouble, please contact our Member Services by email at membership@alaskapublic.org or call 907-550-8400 (9am–5pm) and we are happy to help.

I can’t remember if my Passport account is active. How do I check?

Simply go to https://www.pbs.org/ and sign in. If your account is activate, you’ll see a small blue and white compass rose symbol by your name in the upper left portion of the screen.

Here are some common troubleshooting tips

BE SURE TO ALWAYS USE THE SAME EMAIL USED TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT

CLEAR COOKIES AND CACHE
When you use a web browser it saves some information from websites in its cache and cookies. An HTTP cookie is a small piece of data sent from a website and stored on the user’s computer by the user’s web browser while the user is browsing. This can cause your computer to use a default email or username rather than the correct email used to create your account.

Chrome : clear cache & cookies

  • At the top right of the screen, click  More
  • Click More tools
  • Click Clear browsing data
  • Next to Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, check the boxes
  • Click Clear data

Firefox : clear cache & cookies

  • At the top of the screen, click the  menu icon and select Options
  • Select the Privacy and Security panel
  • Click the Cookies and Site Data section
  • Click Clear Data
  • Check both boxes as click Clear

Safari : clear cache & cookies

  • Click Safari in the upper left-hand side of the screen
  • Click Preferences
  • Click the Privacy tab at the top of the pop-up window [include privacy icon]
  • Click Remove Now

Device Activation

PC or Laptop

  • From a PC or laptop – not a smartphone
  • Go to https://www.pbs.org/passport/
  • Enter the four word activation code with the dashes between the words and no spaces
  • When the code is accepted, you will be asked to create your PBS account with the email address and a password
  • You should then be taken to pbs.org when you can see that
    Alaska Public Media is your preferred station and that you are recognized by your name and that the blue compass rose symbol is displayed. This symbol means that you can view anything available in the Passport library.
  • The next time you want to view something, go to pbs.org and log in using your email address and password.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE – activation and initial creation of your PBS account MUST occur on a desktop, laptop, or tablet. NOT on a Smartphone. After activation and creation have been done, you can view on your Smartphone using the PBS app. But you CANNOT go through the activation and account creation process on a phone.
Amazon Fire TV

  • When you are on your Amazon FireTV and receive a message to activate, take note of the activation code. You will use this code in the next step.
  • On your computer, tablet, or phone, open a web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.
  • Type https://www.pbs.org/activate in the address bar.
  • Type your activation code in the textbox provided.
  • Click Continue.
  • Your Amazon FireTV has been activated and you can return to your Amazon FireTV to begin watching PBS videos.
