Department of Corrections officials say in a release that Brian Pinkerton was found dead just before 7 a.m. Thursday.

He had a full medical examination on Wednesday that didn't indicate anything was wrong. An autopsy will be conducted, but officials say preliminary reports didn't show any signs of physical trauma.

The release says he had spent time in a specialized medical unit but was allowed to return to the prison's general population.

Pinkerton has been in jail since Jan. 8 on multiple probation violations.

He is the fourth inmate to die in custody this year. All prisoner deaths are reviewed by Alaska State Troopers and the State Medical Examiner's Office. The corrections department will also conduct an internal review.
