The Anchorage School District is letting 55 employees go. Thirty-five non-tenured teachers were laid off. In addition, 20 administrative and support staff members will be laid off. If jobs open over the summer, staff members may be recalled. The last time the Anchorage School District issued layoffs for teachers was in 2003, but they were all rescinded once more funding became available. In the past, the district has been able to rescind layoffs after additional funding came in. But this year the governor signed education funding legislation before school got out, and officials say the layoffs are likely final.
