Haines seems like a quintessential Southeast Alaska town. There are eagles, bears, salmon, big mountains and rough water. It’s a picture-book no stoplight, no movie theater, low crime type of community. But there’s a seedier and eclectic side of Haines that emerged late this winter: the underground puppet scene.

The ice will soon go out soon on our lakes and rivers. The sea otters are ready to pose for our pictures. On the next Outdoor Explorer, we’re getting ready for paddling season. Host Charles Wohlforth and guests will be talking about canoeing, kayaking, rafting, rivers, lakes and the ocean -- gear, safety, planning and packing. We'll be dreaming about the trips we would love to take, and talking to folks who have done them.

The Armory Show: Art Fair Meets Avant-garde
After my romp through the 2014 Whitney Biennial this past March, I took a crosstown bus from Fifth Avenue to the Armory Show on display on the remodeled Hudson River Piers 92 & 94 .
With two hundred and five exhibitors, the Armory Show is the largest art fair in New York and really Disneyland for art lovers.

Community Food Security: Angoon Garden Assistance Program
The only permanent settlement on Admiralty Island, 55 miles Southwest of Juneau and 41 miles North of Sitka, Angoon is a small community of about 570 residents.
Because of the community’s remote location, produce available in town is very expensive and has often traveled hundreds if not thousands of miles before reaching the consumer. Alaska News Nightly: April 8, 2014

A Different Kind of Sister
Today we meet a pair of sisters. Nine years ago, Gracia O’Connell and Jesenia Peterson were matched in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska program.
Jesenia still remembers her response when asked what kind of Big Sister she wanted.
We Are The Ionians
Ionia is a remote, and sometimes misunderstood intentional community located outside Kasilof, Alaska. The community was originally formed nearly 30 years ago by four families, each seeking a simpler, quieter life.
The group, now numbering around 30 full-time residents, continues to pursue their goals in the relative solitude of their 160 acre communal property.
