The Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery is on two hour notice. Two-hour notice means when a fishery is called, officials will give the fleet a minimum of two hours to get into position. In general, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game waits to call an opening until the percentage of mature roe is above 11 percent. Two test samples were taken Monday. A sample from Aleutkina Bay had 7.9 percent mature roe, and a sample from Mountain Point on Kruzof Island was at 8.9 percent. Sitka Sound sac roe herring is one of the state’s most lucrative fisheries. There are 48 permit-holders.
