State Senate Passes Oil Tax Overhaul; Changing Arctic Impacts On Subsistence, Economies

The state senate on Wednesday night narrowly passed an overhaul of the oil tax system. Iditarod Trail Committee deals with an unusual death of a dropped dog in Unalakleet. Making of a Refuge: Surveying the Alaska Peninsula

In the 1970's biologists did reconnaissance of offshore islands throughout Alaska's coastal areas to determine abundance and distribution of marine mammals and birds to help select lands for new refuges, parks, and monuments that would be created under the 1980 Alaska Lands Act. In 1979, USFWS biologist Edgar Bailey and I undertook a 400 mile survey of the Alaska Peninsula. Read more.

Recovered Polar Bear Cub At Alaska Zoo

Photo courtesy of the Alaska Zoo Facebook. On March 12, 2013, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service received word that a female polar bear had been taken near Point Lay, Alaska. The adult female was accompanied by a cub, which was recovered and transferred first to the community of Point Lay. Read more.

Mayor Sullivan Rejects Union Offer

Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan has rejected an offer to freeze wages of city workers in exchange for tabling a controversial ordinance that would limit unions. KSKA's Daysha Eaton has the story.

The Senate moves closer to a vote on oil-tax legislation. Anchorage School Board Superintendent James Browder announces his impending retirement. Conservative lawmakers have proposed legislation that would require welfare recipients to submit to drug and alcohol tests. New analysis show that health-care costs are slowing down. Browder Steps Down, Replacement Named

Anchorage School District Superintendent Jim Browder will retire in June after less than one year on the job, and his replacement has already been chosen. The announcement came after a closed door meeting between School Board members and Superintendent Jim Browder at the Anchorage School District Education Center.
