Supporters of changes to Alaska’s oil tax structure plan to meet to discuss how best to advance the debate after another legislative defeat.
The co-chairs of the Make Alaska Competitive Coalition, in an email Tuesday, said they are not giving up on pressing for what they call meaningful tax reform, saying the state’s economic future is at stake.
During the regular legislative session, the Senate’s bipartisan majority couldn’t muster the support for an overhaul of the tax structure, and a plan targeted at new-field oil production that did pass the Senate during the session’s last weekend was torpedoed by the House. A plan put forth by the governor during the recent special session was criticized by lawmakers in both chambers before he pulled it from the agenda.
