Governor Sean Parnell objects to Medicaid expansion. Fairbanks suffers a power outage like no other in recent memory. The Anchorage Assembly passes a budget, but remains wrapped up in the debate over ice rinks and tennis courts. Lawmakers are talking about the possibility of state investment in the gas line. Reapportionment of the Legislature appears to be over; the opponents of the plan are giving up. Sen.Mark Begich is targeted for his vote on health care. Sen. Teaching in the City Under One Roof

It takes a different kind of person to live in Whittier, Alaska. The town is accessible only by water or by tunnel, the weather is extreme, and the only housing option is an ugly apartment building. But the community has managed to win over grade school teacher Erika Thompson.  Alaska Public Media video producer Travis Gilmour spent a day with Thompson and found out life in this one-building town is unique, even by Alaska's standards. 10 Years of Encounters with Richard Nelson

Today we’re looking back at 10 years of the public radio program Encounters with Richard Nelson. The show originally began as an interview segment that would sometimes take place outdoors. But, Nelson says he never got comfortable interviewing other people. So, he decided to try talking to himself. The newest season of Encounters begins next month, and Nelson says it will mostly be re-airings of the show’s best programs. Read more.

Like many other indigenous languages, Tlingit is in survival mode. Revitalizing the language was the focus of this year’s Tlingit Tribes and Clans Conference held in Juneau last week. A Juneau resident has one solution for how to keep the language alive. During a conference session, realtor and assemblyman Carlton Smith gave participants a lesson in how to teach Tlingit to children with puppets. And he does it with the help of a special guest. Anchorage has become embroiled in an appropriations debate. Legislative money for tennis courts - or ice rinks. Some assembly members want to crack down on towing firms. The municipality is exploring a plan to unify the fire and police dispatch. The Anchorage Assembly has been working on Title 11, regulating taxis. Alaska Airlines says it will allow passengers to use more electronic devices. Food trucks have become popular in many American cities. In the conference room at Mat-Su Title, with a lovely view of Wasilla lake, we finalized the conservation easement on their historic thirty acre homestead including O’Brien Creek Estuary, overlooking Knik Arm. Cleaning up Town Square with Classical Music?

ATMI stories air on KNBA 90.3 FM Anchorage community members have been brainstorming ways to make Town Square a safer place. One proposed solution is to play classical music into Town Square to discourage illicit behavior and loitering.
