Book Makes Case For US, Canada Merger
The United States and Canada are friendly neighbors with many common cultural and business interests. A new book suggests that partnership should be formalized. The title: Merger of the Century - Why Canada and America Should Become One Country, succinctly defines the premise. Author and dual citizen Diane Francis says because Canada has vast, undeveloped resources but scant population and military, it needs the U.S. to help develop and protect what America also needs.

Murkowski, Young Criticize Shared Beringian Heritage Program Plan’s Transparency
The idea of a shared park between Russia and the United States has – in recent years – been discussed in levels as high as the White House. In 2010, then U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke about it at a meeting in Russia. The National Park Service on Monday released the most recent draft of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries. The release has drawn criticism from Alaska’s senior leaders in DC.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski met this week with federal officials investigating FEMA’s response to this year’s flooding in Galena. The flood left more than half of Galena’s homes uninhabitable. Calista Board Sanctions 6 Board Members For Ethics Violations
The Calista board is publicly censuring three current directors and three past directors for ethics violations. The infractions are related to improper use of stipends and per diem or falsifying meeting minutes. At its October meeting, the board set sanctions for the six individuals. There were a total of 11 directors investigated over a year-long period.

ConocoPhillips Releases 3rd Quarter Earnings
Conoco Phillips has released its third quarter Alaska earnings. According to a release Thursday, the oil company earned adjusted earnings of $494 million in the third quarter of 2013.
BP Announces Divestment Plans, No Details
BP announced plans this week to divest $10 billion in assets before the end of 2015. But spokesman Robert Wine said by email he has received no guidance on where those assets might be, or which part of BP's business would be affected.
