State Gets Money For Efforts To Enroll Children In Public Health Care

Alaska is one of 23 states to share $296.5 million in federal payments for encouraging low-income families to enroll their children in public health programs.

Cleveland Volcano Erupts

The long-forecast eruption of Cleveland Volcano has finally happened. The volcano sent up a 15,000 foot ash cloud at around 8 o'clock on Thursday morning.

Russian Tanker Waiting On Jones Act Waiver

The Russian Tanker Renda is steaming towards Dutch Harbor to pick up 400,000 gallons of gasoline bound for Nome. But it must first receive a waiver of the Jones Act, or it will turn north and deliver diesel fuel only.

Missing Bethel Teen Found Dead

A 15-year-old boy was found dead beside a snow machine in Pinky’s Park in Bethel. Police have not released the boy’s name yet, but say his parents had reported him missing and search and rescue volunteers, Alaska State Troopers, and police had all been looking for him.

Karluk Manor Object Of Lawsuit Against Anchorage Municipality

Less than a month after Karluk Manor began taking in chronic alcoholic tenants, the Housing First facility finds itself not the object, but the springboard for a lawsuit against the Municipality of Anchorage.

The Salvation Army in Fairbanks received an unusual donation in its red collection kettles this holiday season. Salvation Army Fairbanks Major Kevin Bottjen says the anonymous gifts were dropped into several of its red collection kettles in local store fronts Dec. 23.

Plowing through Wind and Rain to see Fall Art

The first weekend in December was the American Bankruptcy Institute’s conference in Palm Springs and Dave’s turn to find an excuse for us to travel. But before driving through California’s desert, we flew into San Francisco to view Pissarro’s People. Pissarro is considered a father-figure to Impressionists as he empathized with those who wished to take their easels and palettes outdoors observing the sublime of nature - wind, rain and changing light patterns. Alaska Sudan Medical Project

Earlier this year, I returned to Alaska after 27 months of U.S. Peace Corps service in Central America. I worked as a community health volunteer in Nicaragua, the second-poorest country in the western hemisphere (after Haiti). After returning to Alaska, I began to search for local volunteer opportunities. A friend told me of the famed Dr. Jill Seaman and her involvement with the nonprofit, the Alaska Sudan Medical Project (ASMP). Read more.

Some Peppers Sold In Alaska Recalled Due To Salmonella Concerns

Rohan Geographic: 6th Grade Around the World

My name is Rohan Silbaugh. I am 11 years old and I am traveling with my parents around the world at from my home in Anchorage. We started our trip late in May, 2011 and will return exactly one year later. We have traveled in Asia for five months and will leave tomorrow. We have been to China, Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, India, and Thailand. I was fascinated by all the astonishing things I saw. Judge Releases BP From Probation For 2009 Spill

A federal judge today sided with BP Exploration in a lawsuit brought by the U.S. Government alleging two probation violations stemming from a 2009 oil spill.

Man Faces Four Charges For Injecting Teen With Heroin

A man who injected an Anchorage teenager with heroin before Christmas now faces four charges and $90,000 bail. Meanwhile the 14-year-old girl remains in a city hospital.
