The U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed the right of citizens to make changes to the congressional redistricting process through initiatives. With one congressional district for the whole state, it’s impossible to gerrymander Alaska when it comes to national representation. But the decision could draw more attention to how political lines for the Legislature are drawn.

2014 Candidates for Alaska Legislature – Primaries
Two-term incumbent Eric Feige lost his race for House District 9 to challenger Bill Colver. Benny Nageak narrowly keeps his seat in House District 40 (Barrow/Kotzebue) after a tight race against Dean Westlake. Over in Fairbanks' House District 3, incumbent Tammie Wilson won over incumbent Doug Isaacson; the two were pitted against each other due to redistricting.

But while it's gotten less attention, there's also a contested statewide race on the Democratic ballot for the office of lieutenant governor. Appeals Court Reinstates Overfishing Charges Against Kookesh, Two Others
The Alaska Court of Appeals has reinstated over-fishing charges against former State Senator Albert Kookesh and two other men. In 2009, Kookesh and three others were fishing for sockeye salmon at Kanalku Bay near his hometown of Angoon. A state wildlife trooper observed them catching more salmon than allowed under their subsistence permits.

Former Haines Rep. Thomas Files To Run For State Office In 2014
Former Haines Representative Bill Thomas has filed a letter of intent to run for state office in 2014. Thomas filed late Friday. He did not indicate which office he will seek, but he is eligible to run for either House or Senate in districts representing Juneau. House District 33 includes downtown Juneau and Douglas Island, as well as Gustavus, Haines, and Skagway. It is part of Senate District Q.
Redistricting Decision Suits Petersburg Officials
Petersburg’s mayor is pleased with the court decision in favor of the state’s latest redistricting plan. The legislative boundary map will put Petersburg in a district with Sitka and 22 other small Southeast communities.
