A trip to the coast usually means you’re going to see sea stars, but a mysterious disease is killing them along the West Coast. There had been a few reports of sick sea stars in Alaska, but recently in Sitka, the first mass die offs in the state were detected. Scientists in Sitka are tracking the progress. Download Audio

One of your duties as a voter is to select judges for retention. Toward the back of your voter guide, you will find considerable information about those judges. Their basic biography-everything from their age to what communities in the state that they have been residents of. Their education, the political and government positions they have held, their interests and a statement from the judges themselves. It was time to hug our East Coast kids and see some fall art. Husband Dave and I flew to DC for a weekend of soccer starring our grands, Tess (8) and Kai (6). Late October in Alaska is not conducive to outdoor activities but soccer fields adjacent to George Washington’s Potomac home were still verdant with parents decked out in polar fleece cheered for their toddling players who often put the ball into the wrong goal—to grandparents it’s all love. Tune in to Masterpiece Contemporary’s new series Worricker. The series features Bill Nighy as MI5 spy Johnny Worricker. This series follows the exploits of the intensely private and scrupulous Worricker—from MI5 headquarters in London to exile on a Caribbean island to life on the run with his former lover and fellow agent Margot Tyrrell (Helena Bonham Carter).

This special, narrated by Emmy Award winner Gary Sinise, Navy Seals – Their Untold Story recounts the ticking-clock missions of the “Commandoes of the Deep” through firsthand accounts — including that of a D-Day demolition team member — and through never-before-seen footage, home movies and personal mementoes.

The elections are finally over, although in Alaska, there is still uncertainty over the U.S. Senate and Gubernatorial race outcomes. Those race results will not be clear until more than 20,000 early, absentee and questioned ballots are counted next week. The sweet strumming of the ukulele invokes a feeling of island bliss. But one minute of listening to The United Kingdom Ukulele Orchestra will make you realize this isn’t flip-flops music. Punk rock, rock and roll, pop music and oldies – you name it, this octet will play it on their ukuleles. Peter Moss and all the musicians of the United Kingdom Ukulele Orchestra are delighted to be supporters of the children’s project in Israel “Ukeleles for Peace,” which was founded and realized by the music lecturer Paul Moore several years ago together with both Israeli and Palestinian children. A part of the wages of the orchestra will be donated every evening to this award winning reconciliation project, in which kids with the help of music and inexpensive musical instruments discover, together with parents and schools, a way forward throughout this war-torn region.
