Instead of Golfing, Vacation with the Environment

Recently I met up with Jay Sargent, a former high school classmate, and discovered that not only does she still love horses, she now loves dolphins – enough to go on vacation with them. Read more

Voices of Glacier Bay: An Adventure in Sound

Alaska writers and naturalists Richard Nelson and Hank Lentfer are nearing the end of a two-year project recording the "Voices of Glacier Bay." The project is a collaboration between Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, University of Alaska Southeast and Cornell University, which houses the world’s largest collection of natural sounds. Nelson and Lentfer hope to change how others experience the world through a dimension beyond what we can see. They want us to listen and listen closely. Download Audio:

Finding The Pumpkin King

October is here, and that means the reign of the pumpkin has begun. Many of us will be eating pumpkin pie in the coming months, or maybe seeds from our jack o lanterns. But there are some who desire more pumpkin, and they get it through beer. Listen now:

AK: Bodybuilding

The sport is usually associated with steroids, spray tans and bizarrely bulging muscles, but for some competitors in Alaska, drug-free bodybuilding isn't about vanity, it's about therapy. After 24 years as an Army Ranger and a grueling tour in Afghanistan, Frank Loomis retired, joined the police and started having a mid-life crisis. His solution? Start training with Mr. Alaska. KSKA's Anne Hillman followed Loomis from training to his first masters level competition. Download Audio

Alaska’s Fiscal Future

Alaska has had an interesting fiscal ride through the decades. From a time when the purchase of the territory from Russia was called "Seward's Folly" to the discovery of the rich oil resources of Prudhoe Bay -- which made the state very cashy, fairly quickly. Alaskans have enjoyed the benefits of oil revenues for decades, but production is in decline and that means the state must ramp up production or slow down expenses. We're in deficit spending now but the population and demand for services continues to ramp up. What should be done to help Alaska get out of deficit mode. AK: Looking Inside

On AK we often travel to wild and strange places and meet the people who live there. Today's journey is no different, except the place is inside each of us. Earlier this year Sitka had a tarot card reader in residence. The Tarot, it turns out, is mystical -- but not magic. Like professional therapy, it's really about looking into a mirror, as tarot skeptic Robert Woolsey discovers. Download Audio

Old-Fashioned Navy Bean & Ham Soup

bean-and-ham-1 Fall in Alaska is that glorious 3 days of the year where the leaves turn beautiful shades of yellow and orange, there's a distinct smell of sour cranberries and wood smoke lingering in the air, and the Chugach mountains look like they're on fire with all the brilliant red of the dwarf birch and blueberry bushes.

Attack Ads…With A Twist

It seems to be fairly universal that everyone is growing weary of the constant barrage of attack ads. To help us lighten the mood a bit as we race to the November 4th finish line, KSKA’s Dave Waldron found a way to bring levity to the attack. Download Audio
