Anchorage-Wide Children’s Book Drive Underway

Senator Bill Wielechowski and thread -- Alaska's statewide Child Care Resource and Referral agency are launching their 6th annual children’s book drive. Starting in Mid-June, collection bins for children’s books will be located near the customer service areas or front doors of all four Anchorage Fred Meyer locations. Learn more.

Tora Thynes, A Norwegian Immigrant’s Story

Tora Thynes was born in Norway and emigrated to the U.S. as a young girl, sponsored by her aunt. In this interview, she tells Heidi Lee about life in Norway during the German Occupation of WW II, and watching warships from both sides of the conflict come into the fjord near her village. She also tells about fishing in Petersburg with her husband Pete on the sailboat/troller he named after her and about her many trips to Norway with her family.

Fourth Avenue, Natives and B Girls

In the early fifties, Alaska Natives made up less than a third of Anchorage’s population. In the forties, a court order had officially put a dent in racial segregation, making it illegal for businesses to post signs forbidding entrance to Natives, but it was another ten or fifteen years before the shock to the white population wore off and proprietors greeted my Athabascan relatives with a smile.
