Some Residents Fighting AHFC’s Decision To Go Smoke Free
Government subsidized senior public housing will go totally smoke-free in August. The Alaska Housing Finance Corporation will implement no-smoking rules in residents’ apartments, forcing smokers outside to common areas. But some folks at Juneau’s Mountain View Apartments are fighting back.

Freezing rain has hit Anchorage and is expected to stick around until this evening, when it is expected to transition into up to 5 inches of snow. UAF researcher receives grant to utilize peptides in vaccines
A University of Alaska Fairbanks researcher has received more than $1.5 million from the National Institutes of Health to figure out how vaccines work. Andrea Ferrante hopes his work will lead to more effective inoculations against diseases, such as the Ebola or Zika viruses. Download Audio

Alaska primary results solidify heading into end of vote counting
The races for Alaska’s legislative elections this fall continue to take shape on Thursday, after most of the remaining absentee ballots were counted. In all but a few races, it would take hundreds of ballots that hadn’t previously been announced to change results.

State Health Commissioner Valerie Davidson is granting Providence Hospital in Anchorage permission to build eight new emergency room beds. The decision also denies Alaska Regional's plan to build the first freestanding emergency rooms in the state. The commissioner hopes the decision will help discourage inappropriate use of an expensive healthcare option.
