An Anchorage jury has returned with a split verdict for a fisherman accused of falsely reporting his black cod or sablefish catches from the Gulf of Alaska. The man was a fishing companion of Arne Fuglvog, the disgraced former Highliner of the Year who was also convicted of a similar charge.

NPS Finishes Katmai Trophy Grizzly Hunting Study

The National Park Service recently finished a study on the impact of trophy grizzly hunting in Katmai Preserve. By Park service estimates, the harvest numbers are not affecting population, or conflicting with other park uses, but some conservation groups and the bear viewing industry are not so sure that’s accurate. Before renewing 10-year contracts for sport hunting guides, the NPS would like the public to weigh in.

Five Finger Light House Hosting Humpback Whale Research Project

For the past two summers, the Five Finger light house near Petersburg has hosted humpback whale research. A graduate student from Oregon State works with a rotating team of interns to study the impact of vessel noise on humpback whale communication. Troopers Name Officer In Deadly Shooting

Alaska State Troopers on Monday identified the officer involved in a fatal shooting last week. In a web posting, troopers said Sgt. Paul Anthony "Tony" Wegrzyn shot and killed Justin Lloyd Abrahamson on Friday after Abrahamson advanced on troopers with a raised bat.

Mapping Tool To Help Arctic Response

A mapping tool that could help emergency response in the Arctic launched last week. The Environmental Response Management Application or ERMA is an interactive map, with data layers that can be switched on and off. The various layers have information like offshore lease areas, sea ice extent and critical animal habitats.

Former Murkowski Aide To Be Released From Prison

A former fisheries aide to Sen. Lisa Murkowski, convicted of falsifying his own fishing records, is scheduled for release from prison by Saturday. According to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, Arne Fuglvog has been serving time at a minimum security camp in Virginia.
