Pilot Dies In Plane Crash Near Skwentna

A pilot has been found dead in a downed plane near Skwentna. The Anchorage Daily News reports that searchers Tuesday found the pilot, who's name is not being released yet, after a search was initiated when the plane a Grumman C-1A did not arrive as scheduled at the Nixon Fork Mine near McGrath.

Grant Aviation Bids on Akutan Air Service

It will be at least another month before Akutan’s new airport gets scheduled service and probably longer. The latest round of bids on the federally-subsidized flight route turned up one proposal, but it’s unlikely that the government will accept it.

King Crab Fishery Opens Up

The Bering Sea’s most famous fishery is underway. The Bristol Bay red king crab season opened today, and the quota is 7.8 million pounds – a small increase from last year. As of Monday, no pricing information was available. Eighty-four vessels pre-registered, but just 42 have gone out so far, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. About 60 vessels usually participate in the fishery.

Fairbanks Man Sentenced To 5 Years In Drug Conspiracy

A Fairbanks man was sentenced to nearly 5 years in jail for his role in a drug conspiracy. Twenty-two year old Adrian Steele and his co-conspirators trafficked crack, cocaine, and oxycodone through fake record labels, one of which was named after the south Fairbanks area where they sold most of their drugs.

Crews Search For Missing Palmer Pilot

A search is underway for a missing plane. Palmer pilot Brendan Mattingly was last seen in at an airport in Soldotna on Saturday. Alaska State Troopers say Mattingly and his red, white and green Piper PA-19 Super Cub have not been seen since.

A Sitka man is dead after an encounter with a brown bear. Authorities spent Monday searching southern Chichagof Island, near Sitka, for the animal believed to be responsible in the fatal mauling of a 54-year-old Tomas Puerta.
