Taylor Bickford Leaving Alaska Redistricting Board

Taylor Bickford is leaving the Alaska Redistricting Board. Chairman John Torgerson says Bickford, and assistant director, Jim Ellis, will be moving on, effective Oct. 12, leaving an administrative assistant to manage day-to-day activities. The Board has to stand ready to respond if the Alaska Supreme Court does not let the temporary redistricting plan stand after the general election.

Incumbent Rep. Johansen Talks About His Candidacy

Ketchikan’s Kyle Johansen is officially running for the District 33 House seat as an independent. The incumbent Republican representative dropped out of the party primary race earlier this year. State elections officials certified his general-election petition Monday.

Ballot Propositions Fall; Young Wins Republican Nomination

Both ballot propositions fall in the Primary Election. Two Republic incumbents lose their primary election bids. Approximately 10 new members join the Alaska House of Representatives. The turnout was considered low in Tuesday’s primary election. But voters turned out in enough numbers to defeat both ballot propositions.

Davis Leads Crawford With 800 Absentee Ballots Left To Count

Other Senate races saw Fairbanks Republican Ralph Seekins fail in his bid to return to the Legislature. Former state labor commissioner Click Bishop won that race. Lesil McGuire held off Jeff Lanfield, Bob Bell defeated Liz Vazquez, and, on the Democratic side, by a margin of less than a hundred votes, Anchorage Senator Betty Davis looks to have withstood a challenge from Harry Crawford.

Kenai Peninsula Incumbent Loses To Soldotna Mayor

After a long summer of heated campaigning, the Senate race on the Kenai Peninsula ended with the incumbent defeated. The winner, Soldotna Mayor Peter Micciche does not face a challenger in November.

Barrow’s Ben Nageak Wins House District 40 Race

In rural House races, Democrat Ben Nageak of Barrow will be going to the state House. He defeated three opponents and will be unopposed in the general election. And Neal Foster beat Woodie Salmon.

Coastal Management Issue Likely To Reemerge During Legislative Session

Despite the failure of Ballot Measure Two, Alaska could still reestablish its Coastal Management Program. Lawmakers on both sides of the vote expect to work on the issue again next legislative session.

Davis Talks Money with Absentee Ballots Yet to be Counted

The Alaska primary election Tuesday saw the defeat of both ballot measures and a couple of very close races between Democrats in Anchorage. In House District Seventeen in Airport Heights, Democrat Geran Tarr came out about a hundred votes ahead of Cal Williams. And in Senate District M, in East Anchorage, including the military base and Eagle River, there are still hundreds of absentee ballots to count, and Bettye Davis holds a slim lead.

Stoltze Routs Connelly

The Republican primary race for Matanusaka Valley's state House District 11 ended with incumbent Republican Bill Stoltze easily defeating challeger Tom Connelly. Stoltze, who has served in the legislature since his 2002 election, came out of Tuesday's primary with 82% of the vote.

Valley Upset Unseats Menard

Republican upstart Mike Dunleavy is heading to Juneau. Dunleavy's upset of incumbent Wasilla Senator Linda Menard has big implications for next year's legislature.

Young, Cissna Win; Ballot Measures Fail

Incumbent U.S. Representative Don Young easily won the Republican nomination for Congress on Tuesday. He will face Sharon Cissna who handily defeated a field of Democrats and Jim McDermott who ran unopposed for the Libertarian nomination. Two statewide ballot measures failed. One would have created a coastal zone management program (38% yes, 62% no) and the other would have allowed local governments to create additional property tax relief (49.45% yes, 50.55% no). Southeast Primary Results: 10 Candidates, 5 Races

Wrangell Representative Peggy Wilson knocked out two Ketchikan opponents to win the Republican nomination for the new House District 33. Ketchikan is the largest community in the district, which also includes Saxman, Coffman Cove, Thorne Bay and several other Prince of Wales Island communities.

Wilson Wins District 33 Republican Primary

Incumbent Wrangell Representative Peggy Wilson won the Republican party’s nomination Tuesday, with 986 votes, or about 46 percent. Ketchikan’s Agnes Moran was second in the GOP race, with 683 votes, and Patti Mackey finished the night in third with 476.

Stoltze, Connelly Face off in House District 11

Republican State House incumbent Bill Stoltze has served Matanuska Valley area voters for ten years. Now, Tom Connelly is challenging Stoltze for the District 11 House seat in the upcoming primary, and the Chugiak resident plans to do it without spending a penny.

Landfield Challenges Senator McGuire in South Anchorage Primary

Jeff Landfield is challenging Senator Lesil McGuire in District K - mid-town, and south Anchorage west of the Seward Highway. The Republican's rallying cry has a Tea Party tone. He says he's running to, "rein in wasteful government spending and bring true conservative values to the Alaska State Senate.”

Next Tuesday 5 Democrats are running against each other, hoping to garner the most primary votes to be able to challenge Republican Don Young for Alaska's lone seat in the U.S. House.

Crunch Time for Hotly Contested Ballot Measure 2

Ballot Measure 2 on Tuesday’s primary election ballot is the most hotly contested initiative Alaska voters have faced in recent memory. Only the 2008 “Clean Water Initiative” — aimed at stopping development of the proposed Pebble Mine — had more spending for and against. As with that initiative, industry groups are lining up against Measure 2 — outspending proponents by more than seven to one.
