A key figure in Valdez history has died. John Kelsey wore many hats, but is best known for building Valdez to what it is today. He’s most remembered for bringing economic development to the city in the 50s, 60s and 70s.  Kelsey led the way in rebuilding Valdez after it was destroyed by the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake. A hunting guide from Wasilla is heading to jail after being found guilty of two counts of big game violations by a jury in Cordova District Court. The violations stemmed from an illegal wolf hunt a year ago.

Clean Up Begins On Cargo Ship In Valdez With Leaky Containers

Crews have begun cleaning and decontaminating a cargo ship that has been docked in the Port of Valdez for almost two weeks after leaking containers were discovered onboard. The BBC Arizona’s cargo was offloaded into a decontamination area earlier this week. Coast Guard spokesperson Lieutenant Allie Ferko says all 28 containers will be removed whether they are leaking or not... Listen Now

Athabascan Elder Katie John Passes Away

The Athabascan elder who was the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit that strengthened Native subsistence fishing rights in Alaska has died. Katie John passed away early Friday morning at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage. She was 97-years-old. Download Audio

Copper Center School Shutting Down

The oldest school in the Copper River School District is officially closing down.  The Copper River School Board voted unanimously this week to shutdown the Copper Center School due to low enrollment.  The District is seeking approval from the Alaska Department of Education to move forward with its closure plan.
