Corky, a juvenile male Northern sea otter, was rescued by trained U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff near mile 5 of the Kenai Spur Highway on November 29th. When brought to the Center, Corky weighed 9.6 kilograms (21.2 lbs.) and had poor renal function and a bacterial strep infection.
When released following rehabilitation at the Alaska Sealife Center, Corky immediately dashed into the water followed by multiple rolls and dives. Staff observed him for about 30 to 40 minutes floating within feet of other otters 200 to 500 feet off of the shore.
Corky seemed perfectly at home once again.
