Forty-Four Years of Keeping Anchorage Clean

As the temperatures begin to rise and the record snowfall continues to melt, miles of trash is unveiling along streets and roadways of the Municipality of Anchorage.

For the 44th year, the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce will engage local businesses, school youth and community members during Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup Week, held May 12 to 19.

“This is one of the Anchorage’s longest-standing and largest community service events, and we are proud to make such a measurable impact on the community,” said Anchorage Chamber board chair Bruce Bustamante.

“It is amazing the transformation local volunteers make in just one week! Last year, more than 800,000 pounds of trash was collected during the Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup Week.”

Businesses and residents from Eagle River to Girdwood are encouraged to join the team and help beautify the Municipality between May 12 to 16.

Orange bags will be available for pickup at all Anchorage and Eagle River Fred Meyer locations, and the Anchorage Chamber office, starting May 1. Individuals are allowed up to two (2) bags a piece.

The Anchorage Chamber reminds everyone to please wait to clean until the official start of cleanup week and that after orange bags are filled with trash, please do not leave them on the side of the road.

The Anchorage Regional Landfill (Glenn Highway and Hiland Road), Anchorage Central Transfer Station (54th Avenue & Juneau-off Old Seward Hwy) and Girdwood Transfer Station will be open for free residential use on Saturday, May 12 and Saturday, May 19. Additionally, orange bags are accepted at no charge for the entire Citywide Cleanup Week.

Loads must be covered and cannot exceed the size of a standard pickup. Visit citywidecleanup.org for a complete list of regulations on dumping before making your stop.

The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit, member-driven business organization with nearly 1,100 members representing 63,000 employees. For businesses interested in membership, annual fees are based on the type of organization and number of full-time year-round employees.
