Shell Tallies Cost of Kulluk Grounding

Shell’s chief executives responded to questions about the January grounding of the Kulluk drill rig during the company’s annual results conference in London Thursday. In a prepared presentation, Shell’s Chief Executive Officer, Peter Voser, played down the company’s many mishaps in Alaska last year.

Divers and remotely operated underwater vehicles have completed a review of the hull of a Royal Dutch Shell drill barge that ran aground two weeks ago on a remote Alaska island.

EPA Cites Both Shell Drill Rigs For Air Pollution Violations

Shell's Arctic drilling problems continue to mount up. This morning word is out that the Environmental Protection Agency has cited both of its drilling rigs for air pollution violations during the past drilling season. The Noble Discoverer still sits in Seward, originally detained for safety and propulsion violations. And the Kulluk is anchored in a Kodiak Island bay still being inspected for damages from being grounded on New Year's Eve.

Fuel May Have Leaked From Kulluk Lifeboats After Grounding

It looks like there was a spill from the Kulluk grounding after all. One of four life-boats dislodged and washed ashore as the huge rig grounded off Sitkalidik Island has at least two damaged fuel tanks. The rig itself has been towed to more sheltered waters and responders discovered the empty tanks while assessing materials washed to the the shoreline during the New Year's Eve grounding. The spill is estimated as under 270 gallons of diesel fuel. That estimate may rise as more tanks are examined on the four lifeboats.

2 Federal Investigations To Probe Kulluk Incident

There will be two federal investigations of what went wrong with the Kulluk, the 266-foot Shell drilling rig that went adrift in the Gulf of Alaska and ended up on the rocks of the outer coast of Kodiak Island.

The top oil lobbyist in Washington DC says Shell Oil should not be hampered by the grounding of the Kulluk. The American Petroleum Institute says Shell Oil should move forward with its Arctic Ocean plans this year.

Shell Drill Rig Anchored In Kiliuda Bay

Shell's Kulluk drill rig has successfully been anchored in Kiliuda Bay, on the east side of Kodiak Island. It took the Kulluk about 12 hours to be towed 45 miles to the bay. It was re-floated a little after 10 p.m. last night.

Kulluk Dislodged and Underway for Kiliuda Bay

At about 10:10 p.m. last night, the Royal Dutch Shell drilling vessel Kulluk was refloated from Sitkalidak Island, where it has sat for a week. The rig went aground after breaking its tow in a severe storm and washed ashore on New Year’s Eve.

Shell VP Denies State Property Tax Prompted December Departure

Last night (Thursday) Royal Dutch Shell’s vice president for Alaska and two Coast Guard commanders updated the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly on the response to the grounding of the floating drill rig Kulluk. It was the first public briefing made in Kodiak since the rig went hard aground on Sitkalidak Island in a New Year’s Eve storm.
