Public Safety in rural Alaska
Rural Alaska has long had a lack of adequate law enforcement. State budget cuts have exacerbated the problem and recent reporting reveals trouble with how or if some local law enforcement officers are screened before they're hired. What's being done to make rural Alaska safer? LISTEN HERE

She does it on our behalf, as news consumers. Gladstone is in Alaska this week, her very first time, to talk about our uneasy relationship with news as detailed in her book, "The Influencing Machine."

We check in from the trail, where mushers covered the first 100-plus miles from the Willow restart Sunday to the first checkpoints, Yentna and Skwentna, and on to Finger Lake. Alaska Public Media's Zachariah Hughes talked to mushers at Skwentna overnight, and we take a listener question on sled design. Also, today's episode features an extended interview with Ester musher Paige Drobny, an Iditarod veteran and one of a record field of female mushers.

Oil and Gas Speakers Series Continues
The Alaska World Affairs Council is proud to present the second of our Northrim Bank Oil and Gas Series. These events throughout the 2011-2012 season are designed to keep Alaskans abreast of what is going on in the global oil and gas industry and community. This program will feature Marta Jara, President and Director General for the Shell companies in Mexico.
The program, entitled, Global LNG - A Shell View, begins at noon at the Hilton Hotel on Friday, December 9.
