Fish Camp
On the next Outdoor Explorer, our topic is fish camp. Native Alaskans all over the state go to riverside fish camps for the summer to harvest salmon, and as part of an ancient way of life. And a lot of commercial fishermen have fish camps at setnet sites, where they catch the fish going by, they make a little bit of money and to live and sustain themselves in wild places.

Chilkoot Pass
This week's Outdoor Explorer comes to you from the Chilkoot Trail, the infamous route used by Klondike gold rushers during the late 1800s. As you walk the trail, signs of that crazy gold rush period are evident, but even more impressive is how a century has erased much of the gold rush's footprint. Host Charles Wohlforth and friends take on the 33-mile trail over five days of hiking.

Cyrano’s Holiday Offering

Cyrano's Theatre Company is bringing back two favorites for its holiday offerings this year: Pinkalicious the Musical written by Elizabeth Kann and Victoria Kann (based on their picture book by the same name) with music and lyrics by John Gregor and Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and then some) by Michael Carlton, Jim Fitzgerald and John K. Alvarez. Teresa Pond, who directed both plays (as well as the New York premier of Pinkalicious) joins actors Sarah Baird and Austin Roach this week on Stage Talk. Both plays perform through December 18th.

Dotting the coast line of Cook Inlet from Ninilchik to Nikiski are some of the Kenai Peninsula’s oldest businesses. Many of these commercial fish camps are still owned and operated by the families that started them two or three generations ago. KDLL’s Shaylon Cochran has a closer look at the family traditions that are at the center of the culture of setnetting.
