Every month about 1,000 people are released from prison in Alaska. Many of them end up returning to prison. Re-integrating into a community can be challenging. In this program, we bring together a diversity of perspectives to explore the topic of what makes prisoner re-entry successful. Late last summer, walking below a fresh rockfall on Harbor Mountain, a hiker found a mucky old wallet. It contained all the things you expect to find in a wallet -- bank cards, an ID. The leather was wet from Southeast’s damp climate, but still in good shape. The owner was glad to get it back, but he wasn't easy to find. He dropped it on a trail near Sitka 40 years ago. Enjoy the holidays with KSKA this year. While here, Pete takes a field trip to the Bait Shack to meet up with Chef Travis Haugen, and fishing guru Dustin Slinker for a fishing adventure that includes catching a fresh king salmon for their delicious grilled meal that evening. The Alaska World Affairs Council hosted a panel on refugees in Alaska. Panelists included Jessica Kovarik and Margaret Stock.

On Wednesday, Governor Bill Walker introduced a budget proposal. It includes taxes, changing the structure of the Permanent Fund, and further cuts to services across the state. And all of this just a few weeks ahead of the next session.

UAA Department of Music Professor Mari Hahn had an idea of creating an all-new version of the classic tale Hansel and Gretel using Englebert Humperdinck's music with a new libretto that set the story in Alaska. Her efforts have come to fruition with the production of Aklaq and Nayak, An Alaskan Native Adaptation of Hansel and Gretel performing this weekend at the UAA Fine Arts Building Recital Hall. Aklaq and Nayak is a co-production between the UAA Department of Music and Anchorage Opera. PROHIBITION is a compelling documentary series directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick that tells the story of the rise, rule, and fall of the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the entire era it encompassed. The culmination of nearly a century of activism, Prohibition was intended to improve, even to ennoble, the lives of all Americans, to protect individuals, families, and society at large from the devastating effects of alcohol abuse. Tuesday nights through December starting at 7:00 p.m.

MY MUSIC Presents THE CARPENTERS: CLOSE TO YOU is a music-filled documentary that traces the Carpenters' career through the eyes of Richard Carpenter and the group's friends in the music business, features all of their top recording hits, including "(They Long to Be) Close to You," "Top of the World," "Hurting Each Other," "Only Yesterday," "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "We've Only Just Begun." Between 1970 and 1983, the Carpenters were awarded 10 gold singles, and nine gold albums, many of which also achieved multi-platinum status. Monday, December 28. 9:00 p.m.

Cyrano's Theatre Company is closing out 2015 with Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and then some) by Michael Carleton, Jim Fitzgerald and John K. Alvarez (running through December 22nd) but another part of Cyrano's is coming to an end--or at least to a transition. This summer Alaskans dealt with some of the most aggressive wildfires in the state's history--right under the 2004 fires. For the last Alaska Edition of 2015, Ellen Lockyer revisits this major news event to discuss key elements that added fuel to this fire and takes a look at the aftermath.

Every community has a place, where people gather and stories are told. The East Coast has stoops, the South has porches, and in Alaska we have Arctic Entries. Here, Alaskans share their personal stories — funny, sad and sweet. Originally told at the Arctic Entries monthly storytelling event in Anchorage, listen to seven people tell a 7-minute-long true story related to the show’s theme. More than 2,000 kids in Anchorage are considered homeless by the school district. Research shows that kids who lack stability don't do as well in school, but the support of even just one adult can change that.
