The Alaska Federation of Natives wrapped up their annual convention with the usual process of amending and voting on resolutions. The resolutions process was similar to past conventions except for the notable difference this year of candidate endorsements.

Hughes, LaFrance Vie for Greater Palmer House District 11
Republican incumbent Shelley Hughes will vie with Democrat Pete LaFrance for the House 11 seat in November. The district represents the greater Palmer area.

AFN Endorses Begich After Hearing From Senate Candidates
Candidate for U.S. Senate Dan Sullivan and incumbent Mark Begich met on-stage at the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention in Anchorage Friday. AFN delegates voted Saturday to endorse Begich for re-election. An endorsement of Bill Walker for governor and Byron Mallot for lieutenant governor was also announced.
Young Apologizes for Suicide Remarks; Is Warmly Received at AFN
Alaska Congressman Don Young angered many of his constituents this week with remarks about suicide at Wasilla High that he later acknowledged were insensitive. Today, he used his annual speech at the Alaska Federation of Natives to apologize.

Lifelong Alaskan and political newcomer Forrest Dunbar is young and determined. This Yale Law grad wants to be Alaska's next Congressman. Dunbar is running as a Democrat. His social policy fits with that party, but he says he is more in line with Republicans on resource development.

Tilton, Wehmhoff Vie For House 12
House District 12 stretches from eastern Anchorage suburbs to semi-rural precincts in the Matanuska Valley. Two first - time candidates will face off on November 4 for the district's seat in the legislature. They are Republican Cathy Tilton and Democrat Gretchen Wehmhoff.
McGee, Vazquez vie for open House District 22 seat
Rep. Mia Costello vacated the seat for House District 22 this year when she decided to run for Senate K instead. Neither of the candidates vying for her house seat have served in the legislature before, and their positions have some overlap.

Ret. Colonel runs for House District 15, seeks to reduce and realign budget
A political newcomer is vying for the House seat in Anchorage's district 15, which contains Muldoon and Elmendorf. Retired Army Colonel Laurie Hummel, a Democrat, is challenging Republican Gabrielle LeDoux, who has served in the legislature representing first Kodiak and now district 15. KSKA spoke with Hummel about her campaign. LeDoux did not respond to requests for an interview.
