Moon Lake Wildfire Grows To 24,000 Acres

The Moon Lake wildfire in the eastern Interior made a large run Wednesday. The Alaska Division of Forestry reports that the fire 24 miles west of Tok, gained 3,200 acres along its northern perimeter. It’s now consumed over 24,000 acres. Ninety-three people are working the wildfire, which started by lightning back in late June. The nearby Tetlin Ridge and Billy Creek fires also grew Wednesday, as hot dry conditions and southeast winds fueled flames. Download Audio

Study Finds Increasing Wildfire Frequency

A new study finds evidence of increasing wildfire frequency. University of Illinois Ph.D. candidate Ryan Kelly’s project analyzed drill cores from the bottom of lakes in the Yukon Flats. The cores provide a record of sediment accumulation dating back 10,000 years, including charcoal particles deposited by wildfires. Download Audio

Crews Battle New Wildfires in Southwest Region

It's hoped that a change in the weather will calm down wildfires that have flared up in Southwestern Alaska. Two fires were ignited by lightning in the Nushagak drainage, west of Koliganek; and, for the second time this summer, a fire this summer is threatening Lime Village.

Public Speaks at Sunshine Clinic Board Meeting

On Tuesday night, the Sunshine Community Health Center Board of Directors met. In addition to regular Clinic business, the Board allowed an extended period for community members who wished to speak to the recent dismissal of Medical Director Dr. Mary Loeb. Ultimately, no direct action was taken on the subject of Dr. Loeb or Executive Director David Bryant.

The Ketchikan Gateway Borough has reached a settlement agreement with a seasonal business owner who hasn’t paid his sales taxes for about three years.

Man Allegedly Shipped Pot To Ketchikan

A 45-year-old Ketchikan man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly having two-and-a-half pounds of marijuana shipped to Ketchikan.
