Alaska Supreme Court Orders Redistricting Board to Redraw Boundaries

The Alaska Supreme Court is ordering that the state's redistricting plan be redrawn for the 2014 elections. In a opinion released Friday, the court denied the Alaska Redistricting Board's petition for rehearing on a December court decision. The Alaska Supreme Court had ordered the board to redraw the state voting map to be in line with the Alaska Constitution.

Suspect Identified in Kake Homicide

A 14-year old boy from Kake has been identified as a suspect in the homicide of a young girl in Kake earlier this month and has been taken to a Department of Juvenile Justice holding facility in Ketchikan, according to a statement released Saturday by the Alaska State Troopers. The statement did not identify the suspect nor offer any additional details of the investigation or charges against the suspect.

Richardson Highway Closed Near Paxson Lodge

The Richardson Highway is closed from milepost 185 (Paxson Lodge) to milepost 202 (Fielding Lake), according to state's transportation department. "Due to blowing, drifting snow there is no visibility and highways are impassable," the department said in a release. Barricades are being placed at mile 261 (Fort Greely gates) and traffic is not being permitted past that point.

ANC, Mat-Su Schools and UAA Campuses Close Monday

All schools in the Anchorage School District are closed on Monday due to the icy road conditions. All schools in the Mat-Su school district are closed too, except for Glacier View. The UAA, Eagle River and JBER campuses are closed. The administrative offices of ASD are open and employees are encouraged to come to work when and if they can. Many streets throughout Anchorage and the Mat-Su remain extremely slippery.

Driving Conditions Could Be Hazardous Sunday For ANC, Mat-Su

The National Weather service has canceled its freezing rain advisories for Anchorage and the Mat-Su, but warned driving conditions still could be hazardous for the area. Forecasters say the area will still get some rain on Sunday as temperatures rise to the low 40s during the day. High winds - with gusts up to 85 mph along Turnagain Arm and the Hillside areas - are expected through the evening and into Monday morning. A flood watch is still in effect for Anchorage and the Mat-Su.

Freezing Rain Expected for ANC, Mat-Su; Flood Watch Issued

The National Weather Service issued a freezing rain advisory for the Anchorage area and the Matanuska Valley for Saturday. Tropical air will bring freezing rain to the area which could make driving more challenging. Temperatures are expected to rise. The service also issued a flood watch for the Anchorage area and Mat-Su for the weekend as a result of the rising temps, rain and melting snow. Winds could gust up to 60 mph for parts of Anchorage.

Milder Temps, Strong Winds Expected for Anchorage, Mat-Su

The National Weather Service said it could be comparatively mild but possibly very windy in the Anchorage area Monday and Tuesday. Similar forecasts are in store for the Matanuska Valley.

Weather Service Issues High Wind Watch for East Anchorage

The National Weather Service issued a high wind watch for East Anchorage on Saturday and urged residents to monitor the weather throughout the weekend. The service said "travel may be difficult. Trees may be blown over. Loose debris can be moved and damage property."

300 Villages: Slana

Now it's time for 300 villages. This week were going to Slana, a community of about 150 people at the start of the Nabesna Road. It was one of the last spots in the country to stake a homestead.

Weather Service Eliminates Tsunami Threat to Alaska

The National Weather Service has eliminated its tsunami advisory for Alaska. It had issued a warning and then an advisory Saturday night after a 7.7 earthquake was detected about 25 miles south of Sandpit, British Columbia.

Dallas Seavey Out First of White Mountain

Dallas Seavey continued his quest to win the 40th Iditarod leaving White Mountain about 8:22 this morning. Aliy Zirkle took off after Seavey who had about an hour head start. Seavey is racing with nine dogs. Zirkle has 10 in her team.

Dallas Seavey First to White Mountain

Dallas Seavey kept his lead in the Iditarod and was first into White Mountain just after midnight Tuesday morning. Aliy Zirkle who had competed for the lead much of the race was second into White Mountain arriving about 1:25 am. Ramey Smyth, who climbed into contention on Monday, was third. Aarron Burmeister was fourth. Peter Kaiser was just outside of White Mountain on Tuesday morning and in fifth place.

Dallas Seavey Leading Zirkle to Elim

Dallas Seavey and Aliy Zirkle were racing neck and neck towards Elim on Monday just before noon and were distancing themselves from the rest of the Iditarod field. Seavey reached Koyuk early Monday morning and left about 8:29 am. Zirkle took a shorter rest period in Koyuk and left right behind Seavey a few minutes before 9 am. Aaron Burmeister was racing third and out of Koyuk.
