The USS Anchorage arrived in Anchorage Wednesday. The Navy's new ship will be used for transporting troops and equipment. Several events are taking place in Anchorage this week leading up to a commissioning ceremony for the ship Saturday. Leigh Newman author of the just published Still Points North: One Alaskan Childhood, One Grown-Up World, One Long Journey Home spent some of her early teenage years hanging out at a local bookstore.  She said, "It was my refuge. I loved that place. I used to sit and read and dream that I'd grow up to be....no, not a writer...but a bookstore owner." But Leigh did grow up to be a writer.  We shall explore how that happened and other fascinating adventures along the way including her Alaskan training, which taught her to pack light, survive scares aboard her father's Cessna and elude marauding bears in rising flood waters. The first climbers of the season are beginning their attempts on Denali.  And in a few weeks, base camp on the Kahiltna glacier will become an international village of mountaineers. Two explosions have rocked the finish line of the Boston Marathon, leaving at least 2 dead and 23 injured, the Boston Police Department reports. The explosions happened in quick succession four hours after the beginning of the men's race. At that point, the majority of runners had crossed the finish line. Thousands, however, were still out on the course. It’s a sure sign of spring in coastal Alaska, the arrival of migrating shorebirds that flock so thickly they sometimes look like clouds.  Several communities welcome the birds and visitors who want to see them and learn about them, and its a great chance to get out on the water early in the season and forget winter. At the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, the U.S. went from no medals ever in the sport of nordic combined to a gold and three silvers, more than any other country. Now there’s a push on to keep performing in this combination of jumping and distance skiing, and Anchorage is a key to the effort.
