USS Anchorage Comes to Town
The USS Anchorage arrived in Anchorage Wednesday. The Navy's new ship will be used for transporting troops and equipment. Several events are taking place in Anchorage this week leading up to a commissioning ceremony for the ship Saturday. Childhood Trauma and Mental Health

Leigh Newman author of the just published Still Points North: One Alaskan Childhood, One Grown-Up World, One Long Journey Home spent some of her early teenage years hanging out at a local bookstore. She said, "It was my refuge. I loved that place. I used to sit and read and dream that I'd grow up to be....no, not a writer...but a bookstore owner." But Leigh did grow up to be a writer. We shall explore how that happened and other fascinating adventures along the way including her Alaskan training, which taught her to pack light, survive scares aboard her father's Cessna and elude marauding bears in rising flood waters.

Denali Climbing Season Begins
On the next Outdoor Explorer: Climbing North America's highest peak. The first climbers of the season are beginning their attempts on Denali. And in a few weeks, base camp on the Kahiltna glacier will become an international village of mountaineers. Host Annie Feidt will be joined by Denali climbing guides and a National Park Service climbing ranger on the next Outdoor Explorer.

Fish, Family, Freedom and Sacred Water: The Salmon Cultures of Bristol Bay
"If you couldn't have wild salmon, what would you do? How is wealth defined in this community? Do you pray when you catch salmon?"
Tasked by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to decipher the cultural values of wild salmon to to Alaska Native residents in Bristol Bay, Dr. Alan Boraas' and Catherine Knott's interviews with 53 Dena’ina and Yup’ik elders centered on these three questions. Recorded at the University of Alaska Anchorage on the April 10, listen to Dr. Alan Boraas present what he learned throughout this two-year project Tuesday on Addressing Alaskans.

Teens These Days: A Look Inside Anchorage High Schools
Cell phone use, bullying, school violence, and substance abuse are all areas of concern for parents these days. How significant are these problems in our Anchorage area high schools? On the next Line One: Your Health Connection host Prentiss Pemberton and his guests will discuss these topics and explore how prevalent they are in the Anchorage area. They will also address what parents can do to support their children and what we can as a community can do to assist the Anchorage School District in dealing with these threats to our children’s health and well being.

Explosions Rock Boston Marathon Finish Line
Two explosions have rocked the finish line of the Boston Marathon, leaving at least 2 dead and 23 injured, the Boston Police Department reports. The explosions happened in quick succession four hours after the beginning of the men's race. At that point, the majority of runners had crossed the finish line. Thousands, however, were still out on the course.

Spring Bird Festivals
It’s a sure sign of spring in coastal Alaska, the arrival of migrating shorebirds that flock so thickly they sometimes look like clouds. Several communities welcome the birds and visitors who want to see them and learn about them, and its a great chance to get out on the water early in the season and forget winter. On the next Outdoor Explorer, we’ll be talking about the spring migrations and the shorebird festivals coming up in the next week weeks.

Nordic Combined: A Developing Alaskan Sport
At the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, the U.S. went from no medals ever in the sport of nordic combined to a gold and three silvers, more than any other country. Now there’s a push on to keep performing in this combination of jumping and distance skiing, and Anchorage is a key to the effort. On the next Outdoor Explorer, host Charles Wohlforth will be joined by a national team skier and coach, in town to build the athlete pipeline.
