KSKA Holiday Highlights 2011-2012

Just like baking cookies, wrapping gifts and hanging lights, holiday programming on KSKA is a time honored tradition and it starts this Saturday, Dec. 17. In addition to all of your holiday favorites from NPR, PRI and American Public Media, we're excited to bring you Cyrano's production of It's a Wonderful Life - A Live Radio Play this Christmas Eve on KSKA. Arctic Warriors

On the next Outdoor Explorer, we’re talking about Arctic Warriors and the skills they learn and practice. We have two officers in the studio whose military training has helped them make it through Alaska’s harshest weather. One was on a caribou hunt on North Slope when the weather took a dangerous turn. The other led a successful Denali ascent over the summer. What does the military teach about surviving outdoors? We’ll get into that question on this show. Solo the Rescued Sitka Black Tailed Fawn

On June 29th, AWCC staff received an orphaned sitka black tailed deer from the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, arriving on Alaska Airlines Flight 67 from Ketchikan. The orphaned fawn will spend the rest of its days at the Portage facility. More photos.

Alaska Public Media's Zachariah Hughes caught up with the top three -- Nicolas Petit, Mitch Seavey, Joar Leifseth Ulsom -- in Unalakleet on Sunday, as well as the legendary musher DeeDee Jonrowe, who scratched earlier in what she says was her last Iditarod after 36 total starts.
