Man Shoots, Kills Brown Bear Near McHugh Creek
A hiking trail south of Anchorage has been closed after a man was charged by a brown bear and shot it with an assault rifle Sunday. The incident took place between McHugh Creek and Rainbow along Turnagain Arm.
Woman Pleads Not Guilty in Anchorage Hit-And-Run
A woman has been charged in a South Anchorage hit and run. Kayla Johnson, 20, pled not guilty Saturday. The damaged vehicle was spotted by a tipster and Johnson was arrested Friday. She is accused of driving while intoxicated as well as the hit and run on July 20. The victim, Tevin George, is still hospitalized with a serious head injury.

Four Survive Floatplane on Prince of Wales Island
A floatplane crashed on Wednesday on Prince of Wales Island, and all four aboard are expected to survive. The DeHavilland Beaver was owned by Promech Air of Ketchikan.
Man Convicted Of 1st Degree Murder For Shooting, Killing Girlfriend
Wednesday, a jury convicted an Anchorage man of first degree murder for killing his girlfriend by shooting her in the eye last year. The defense for James Marquez, 36, argued for manslaughter, saying Marquez committed the act in a fit of rage. But the prosecution argued the act was done deliberately.
Man Who Crashed JBER Gate Sentenced To 5 Years In Prison
A five year prison term and more than $78,000 restitution is the sentence for the man who crashed a pickup through Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson last January. Kyle Hansen, 26, of Wasilla, was convicted of assaulting a federal officer who was knocked down at a roadblock at the base's gate as Hansen drove out. Hansen had a long chain of DUI convictions behind him.
Orphaned Sea Otter Pups Recovering At SeaLife Center
A pair of Sea Otter pups turned in to the Alaska SeaLife Center as orphaned are doing fine now. The center says hand feeding the animals was quite a chore because they consume 25 to 30 percent of their body weight each day. They are being transitioned from formula to seafood. Agnes was found near Homer in April. Nutka was found in June on Kodiak Island.
Anchorage Teen In Critical Condition After Hit And Run
A teenager is reported in critical condition after being struck by a hit and run driver near the Huffman overpass early Sunday morning in Anchorage. Police are seeking the vehicle that struck Tevin George, 18, who was walking with a friend at the Seward Highway and Huffman.

APD Identified Man Found Dead Near Sullivan Arena
The dead body in an area frequented by drinkers and homeless people near a recreational trail in Anchorage has been identified as Jacob Shavings, 44. Shavings was a resident of the Karluk Manor transition home for chronic alcoholics. No cause of death has been released yet but foul play is not suspected.
Former State Senator John Cowdery Dies
Former state Senator John Cowdery of Anchorage is dead. Cowdery was first elected to the legislature in 1982.

Lawmakers Visit Alaska
Alaska is hosting some Washington visitors this week. Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano visited Coast Guard facilities, and House Speaker John Boehner is touring some Western Alaska communities with Representative Don Young and will appear at a Republican fundraiser on Tuesday. Also in town is former Representative Gabby Giffords, campaigning for expanded background checks for gun sales.
Midsummer Celebrations in Alaska
The peak of summer is a time of celebration in Alaska. In Fairbanks, baseball is played under the midnight sun; in Seward, Mount Marathon awaits; in Barrow it will be Eskimo Games; and there are Independence Day parades all over the state. More Hot Weather, Thunderstorms Expected To Spark More Wildfire Activity
More hot weather in the Interior and the prospect of thunderstorms are likely to result in more wildfire activity. There are currently 86 active wildfires burning statewide. Fourteen of those are staffed. The Alaska Division of Forestry is monitoring two outside of Tok and the Chisana River fire south of the Alaska Highway is now at about 30,000 acres.
