A Washington-based watchdog group has given its “Golden Fleece” award to the Knik Arm bridge project in Southcentral Alaska. Taxpayers for Common Sense says the group behind the project, the Knik Arm Bridge and Toll Authority, or KABATA, “has failed Alaska’s citizens and wasted millions of federal taxpayer dollars, with little to show for it.” Download Audio

New fires have been reported along the Kashwitna River, near the junction of the Susitna River and Watana Creek and a third fire closed almost 30 miles of the Parks Highway north of milepost 317.

Friday marks the hundred year anniversary of the first summit of Denali, known as Mt. McKinley to many outside of Alaska. This year, more than 1,000 climbers will attempt to summit North America’s highest peak. One group, however, has a particularly close link to the original 1913 party. An Alaska State Trooper helicopter rescue ended in tragedy on Saturday night when the rescue helicopter crashed near Larson Lake, killing all three people on board.

This weekend marked a tragic first for Denali National Park. On Friday, three hikers near Toklat road camp made a discovery that would lead to the first bear mauling fatality in the Park’s history.
