Gold Prospecting

It’s a fair bet that the stampeders who flowed north during the Klondike Gold Rush never thought of mining as recreational, but the hunt for gold is something people do for fun, as well as profit. We’ll find out how and why modern recreational miners persist in sifting Alaska’s streams with pans and other obsolete equipment, going after glittering flakes of gold, and hoping for something much richer. National HIV Testing Day

According to the CDC, too many people don't know they have HIV. Nearly 1.1 million people are living with HIV in the U.S., and almost one in six don't know they are infected. Getting tested is the first step to finding out if you have this infection. June 27 is National HIV Testing Day; communities and individuals are encouraged to get tested, know their risks, and to get treatment if necessary. Mayor’s Marathon and other marathons

The marathon is the pinnacle of physical challenges, an event that few are able to finish, much less excel in. But more and more people are taking the challenge to train and to run 26.2 miles, and this weekend Anchorage’s oldest marathon is taking place, the Mayor’s Marathon, which also includes a half-marathon. “Last Letters From Attu” with author Mary Breu

Join author Mary Breu as she tells the story of her great aunt Etta Jones. Breu is the author of "Last Letters From Attu: The True Story of Etta Jones, Alaska Pioneer and Japanese P.O.W." Etta Jones was working as a schoolteacher on the Aleutians when the Japanese invaded Attu. She spent more than three years as a prisoner of war in Japan. British Ambassador Speaks on U.K.-Alaska Relations

Join British ambassador to the United States, Sir Peter Westmacott, for a talk on U.K.-Alaska relations hosted by the Alaska World Affairs Council. Cyrano's Theater Company brings two L.A. performers to Anchorage for an evening of storytelling and songs. Join host Jean Paal and guests, actor Alan Rachins and composer Shelly Markham, on Stage Talk for a sneak peek at what Rachins and Markham will talk about at tonight's benefit for Cyrano's. Rachins is best know for his role as Dharma's wacky dad on the hit TV sitcom "Dharma and Gregg." He also starred in "LA Law." Markham is a Broadway composer and will be playing piano tunes during the Cyrano's benefit. The event happens June 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. Combating Rural Poverty Through ‘Last Mile’ Solutions

Alex Counts founded Grameen Foundation and became its President and CEO in 1997, after having worked in microfinance and poverty reduction for 10 years. A Cornell University graduate, Counts’ commitment to poverty eradication deepened as a Fulbright scholar in Bangladesh, where he witnessed innovative poverty solutions being developed by Grameen Bank.
