Thalattosaur Fossil Discovered Near Kake May Be New Species
The fossil of a Thalattosaur discovered near Kake two years ago is a complete specimen, the first to be found in the western hemisphere. Scientists speculate it could be a new species of the prehistoric marine reptile.

Sailing is Thriving in Juneau
Sailing is thriving in the capital city through a club called Southeast Alaska Sailing, also known as SEAS. The mission of the group is to promote an appreciation of sailing. That’s done through organized races in the spring and summer as well as a weekly event called Get Out The Boat. NOAA to Review Humpback’s Status
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will review whether the North Pacific humpback still needs protection under the Endangered Species Act. A group of Hawaiian fishermen submitted a petition to delist the whale in April and NOAA has released its first finding.
Accessible Playgrounds in Juneau a Work in Progress
It’s recess at Glacier Valley Elementary School. A dozen kids run straight to a piece of playground equipment that looks like a three dimensional spider web. They climb onto the webbing where they hover ten feet off the ground. Elsewhere in the playground, students crawl up ladders, go down slides, pump their legs on swings.

Juneau Clinic Will Close
The Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium plans to close Front Street Clinic on October 1, according to SEARHC COO Dan Neumeister. The decision by the board of directors comes after two days of meetings last week.

35,000 Sockeye Caught In 1st 6 hours Of Snettisham Fishery
Fifty-thousand sockeye salmon is the early catch estimate for a 3-day gillnet opening at Port Snettisham and the Speel Arm near Juneau, with 35,000 of those fish caught in the first six hours.
The fishery is targeting sockeye salmon from the Snettisham Hatchery.
