Incident Meteorologists Help Crews Predict Fire Paths
More than a million acres have burned in the 446 wildfires in Alaska this season. That’s an area larger than Rhode Island. Many of these fires are left to burn if they aren’t a danger to people or infrastructure, but the most dangerous of them are battled by hundreds of firefighters and other support personnel. Some fires even warrant their own “incident meteorologist” – or IMET.

Russian River Sanctuary To Open Wednesday Morning
The Russian River sanctuary will open to sockeye salmon sport fishing Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. and is expected to remain open until Sunday, July 14 at 11:59 p.m., according to an emergency order issued by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Heat Wave Sets Records Across State
New record-high temperatures are being recorded in many places around the state Monday, with Talkeetna topping the charts at 94 degrees. It’s their second-straight day of record-high heat.

Polar Bear Cub Heading To Buffalo Zoo In New York
A polar bear cub rescued on the North Slope in March has been cleared for flight and will head to the Buffalo Zoo in Buffalo, New York on Tuesday next week. The orphaned cub, Kali, has been at the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage since his rescue. The final day to see Kali at the Alaska Zoo will be Monday, May 13, where he can be found out and about in his yard between 11 a.m. and noon and 3-4 p.m. each day until then.
