The sea ice continues to melt away more each summer and the U.S. Senate remains stalled on ratifying the Law of the Sea Treaty. But the Coast Guard is beefing up its arctic presence, research vessels are surveying the sea floor, and other nations are beginning to send cargo through Arctic routes. For Native elders who grew up in rural Alaska, the desire to die at home runs deep. But taking care of elders in rugged and isolated villages is a complicated task. And for many, aging in place is not an option.

300 Villages: Aniak

This week, we’re going to Aniak, on the Kuskokwim River. Our tour guide is Gwendolyn Brock, the preschool teacher in town. She’s lived there 32 years with her husband, Thomas, who is the kindergarten teacher and the mayor.

Air Force Cutting Back Civilian Jobs

Dave Donaldson, APRN – Juneau, Libby Casey, APRN – Washington DC & Dan Bross, KUAC – Fairbanks Military jobs cuts are being felt in Alaska. The Air Force has eliminated more than 250 jobs previously available to civilians at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson near Anchorage.

Yurts Provide Unique Living Situation

Alaskans live in many different kinds of creative structures. Reporter Diana Saverin recently traveled across the state taking shelter in everything from a converted garbage shed to a wall tent. She also found yurts – lots of yurts.
