Adventurer Publishes ‘Northern Exposures’ Book
Jonathan Waterman has traveled with camera and pencil from the top of Denali to the coastline of the Canadian Arctic chronicling more than three decades of adventures. His latest book, Northern Exposures is out from the University of Alaska Press. It’s a compilation of some of his previously published stories and many never before-seen photographs.

Fairbanks Gets New Satellite Facility
People who frequent the trails on the campus of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks may have noticed lots of construction equipment all summer long. It’s part of a project at the Alaska Satellite Facility. The facility is getting a new antenna this year. In coming years, it will collect data from NASA’s polar orbiting satellites.

UAF Career Services Office Will Close
Students are returning to the University of Alaska, Fairbanks campus for classes beginning this week. But this will be the last year they will have the opportunity to seek career advice from staff. The office of Career Services will close in December 2014 as part of what the University calls a “budgetary pullback.”

University Dedicates Murie Building
University of Alaska, Fairbanks Faculty and Staff gathered Thursday for the ribbon cutting and dedication of the new Margaret Murie Life Science Building. The new building houses the Department of Biology and Wildlife alongside the Institute of Arctic Biology. Resolution May Establish Two Dog Training Areas in Effort to Mitigate Trapping Conflicts
A resolution to mitigate conflict between dog owners and trappers could pass easily during tonight’s Regular Borough Assembly meeting. The item is on the consent agenda and unless an assembly member disagrees, two new areas will be established for dog training within the borough.

Interior Mayors Voice Concerns Over F-16 Move
The Air Force is holding public hearings in the Mat-Su Valley and the Fairbanks area this week on a Draft Environmental Impact Statement released last month. The EIS outlines the effects of a proposal to relocate a squadron of F-16s from Eielson Air Force Base to Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson. Mayors from four communities that could be affected by the move held a press conference in Fairbanks on Wednesday to reiterate their concerns with the proposal.

Plane Crash Near Cantwell Claims 3 Lives
An airplane crash Friday near Cantwell killed three people. The remains of pilot 61-year-old Dale Hemman Steilacoom, Washington, as well as 74-year-old passenger John Ellenberg and 52-year-old Laura Buckner, both from South Carolina, were recovered from the crash site.
