Group Continues Push For Indoor Produce Growing Facility
A group that wants to convert Fairbanks dormant Polaris building into an indoor produce growing facility isn’t giving up. Project leader and executive director of the locally based Alliance for Reason and Knowledge, Robert Shields says he’s organizing a campaign to raise money to buy the 1950’s era Hotel, and do initial renovations for hydroponic farming.

Galena Flood Waters Begin Receding
Floodwaters are subsiding at Galena, after an ice jam on the Yukon River broke up last night. State Emergency Operation center Chief Mark Roberts says the blockage began giving way around 8 p.m. The state isn’t expecting major flooding in the down river communities of Koyukuk and Nulato. Roberts says conditions are looking better than previously feared because of the way the ice and water are moving.

Ice Jam Slowly Breaking Up Near Galena
The ice jam that is causing devastating flooding in the Yukon River community of Galena is slowly starting to break up. National Weather Service Hydrologist Ed Plumb says he first saw signs it was crumbling late this morning. He says this afternoon, large pieces were starting to break off the front of the ice jam.

Interior Rivers Begin To Break Up
Break up is starting to happen on Interior rivers. The Yukon River ice began moving early this morning at Eagle. It jammed and caused some flooding of low lying homes and roads. Six homes and a handful of sheds have been hit by truck size chunks of ice.

Tanana River On Track For Record Late Break Up
Tanana River ice is on track for a record late break up at Nenana. Later than normal break ups are expected at many interior river communities, due to this year’s cold spring, but there’s special significance for the Tanana at Nenana, where an over 318 thousand dollar jackpot is at stake in the annual Nenena Ice Classic guessing game. Classic manager Cheri Forness says most of the 261 thousand break up time guesses entered by ticket buyers this year, have gone by.

Wall panels formerly manufactured in China will be produced in Fairbanks. Fairbanks based Bucher Glass has invested in machinery and employees to fabricate curtain walls used to façade buildings.
