Tournament organizer Heath Day said the Alaska Fellowship of Christian Athletes organized the tournament to give teams from across Alaska a chance to play each other before the state tournament in region.
“We put this together to give teams from areas of the state, from all across the state, a chance to play each other in more common ground, in terms of coming to Anchorage instead of having to fly through Anchorage to get back out to each other,” he said.
The Lady Angels won their first game against Scammon Bay Monday morning, and the Angels followed suit against Hooper Bay Monday afternoon in a 58-56 game.
Tuesday, the Bristol Bay boys play Scammon Bay at 10 a.m., and the Lady Angels face Hooper Bay at 6 p.m. Unalakleet ladies play Wrangell at 11:30 a.m., with the men playing Wrangell at 1 p.m.
The other competitors are Unalakleet, Selawik and Wrangell. The first couple days of the tournament are a round robin-style event, giving all the teams a chance to play one another. But Day said there will be a championship game on Thursday.
“And then based on the outcomes of those first three days, we have a tournament committee that is watching all the games that will then decide the schedule for the last day,” he said.
The tournament is also a chance to spotlight different cultures, Day said.
“So we have some dance and music performance groups that are coming in each night between the showcase games,” he said.
The tournament is being held at Grace Christian, and it’s also streamed online at akfca.org.
