Alaska jail fire kills 2 prisoners, seriously injures guard

An early morning fire at an Alaska jail killed two inmates and seriously injured a guard who was trying to release them.

Legislature considers plastic bag ban

The ban in HB81 is proposed by Anchorage Democratic representative Andy Josephson as a measure to reduce waste and pollution. Josephson argues that plastics are harmful to the environment and can be ingested by fish and wildlife.

Diomede’s outdated water system recovers only partially after failure; residents make do with snow melt and run-off

Earlier this month, residents of Diomede had to rely on melting snow and run-off as drinking water for 11 days. The community’s running water was restored on Monday evening, but local experts say they aren’t out of the woods yet, as the system is still not fully functioning.
