House Rejects Coastal Management Bill

The State House Tuesday rejected a bill to extend the state's coastal management program. The measure passed by the Senate late yesterday failed by an 18 to 18 vote in the House.

Coastal Management Bill Passes Senate

It took the Senate only one day to pass a bill extending the Coastal Management Program. Then the members adjourned and headed for home. The House will take up the bill Tuesday morning. However, there is little chance the measure will become law.

So far, there's been no deal on a one-year extension of the Coastal Zone Management program. State House Majority Leader Allen Austerman says polling over the weekend did not yield enough support to accept the Senate's offer.

Lawmakers Scramble as Coastal Management Program Begins Shutdown

The shutdown of Alaska’s Coastal Management Program is underway, even as some lawmakers continue to work behind the scenes to save it. Employees with the Division of Coastal and Ocean Management received layoff notices on Thursday. That followed letters on Tuesday to coastal districts and state agencies that participate in the program, informing them their federal grants had been terminated.

Special Session Plans on Hold

The president of the Alaska Senate says tentative plans for a second special legislative session are on hold. Republican Gary Stevens, of Kodiak, says the House and Senate still can’t agree on extending the state’s coastal zone management program, which expires July 1, and they won’t meet in special session until a deal is reached.

Lawmakers Preparing to Head Back to Juneau

There’s no word yet on whether a special session will be held next week to deal with the single issue of keeping the Coastal Management program alive. However Senate officials are meeting on Sunday to make a final decision.

Lawmakers Debate Special Session for Coastal Management Program

Alaska lawmakers are being polled today to see if there is enough support to call themselves into special session to deal with the Coastal Management Program. Senate President Kodiak Republican Gary Stevens sent out the email to lawmakers. Senator Stevens was not available Wednesday, but Senate Majority Leader Anchorage Republican Kevin Meyer says if enough lawmakers agree, the session would be held next week on May 31 and would only take a day or two.
